If you believe cats should be treated with care, compassion and understanding, then this is the course for you!

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills in many areas of feline behaviour to ensure you can:

  • Reduce feline stress during visits to the veterinary clinic
  • Incorporate behaviour into your welfare assessment of cats
  • Effectively educate your clients on how best to meet their cats’ behavioural needs
  • Understand how cats develop problem behaviours, how to prevent them and how to provide first aid behavioural advice when clients’ cats present with problem behaviour

"We are very excited to be able to offer this course, written by a multidisciplinary team of recognised experts. Cats are so unique in their behaviour and the more we understand them, the better we can care for them" Dr Sarah Ellis, iCatCare Feline Behaviour Specialist

Course Outline

Module 1: What am I and where did I come from?
Learning about the behavioural ecology, evolution and domestication of the cat will help you understand what makes a cat a cat and the relevance of this to veterinary practice and your clients.

Module 2: What do I perceive and what can I say?
Getting to grips with the feline senses and how they are utilised in communication will help you understand the best ways to interact with cats, as well as how to manage cat–cat relationships.

Module 3: Will I grow up to be happy?
Studying the behavioural development and behavioural health of kittens will aid your ability to educate your clients on how to give their kittens the best chance at becoming well adjusted pets, as well as ensuring that you provide positive experiences to kittens in the veterinary clinic.

Module 4: What do I feel and am I ok?
By being able to recognise the different emotions cats can feel, you will become better skilled at recognising early signs of distress and pain.

Module 5: Creating cat friendly homes
Put your newly found knowledge into practice and develop the skills to help cats lead as stress-free lives as possible at home.

Module 6: What do I know and what can I learn?
Understanding how cats learn and how they perceive and evaluate the world around them will help you to develop the training skills to put this knowledge into practice to help reduce stress for cats coming to your clinic.

Module 7: Creating cat friendly clinics
Learn how to make your veterinary clinic behaviourally friendly, your team behaviourally aware and develop the skillset to solve behavioural dilemmas.

Module 8 & 9: Clinical animal behaviour (2 modules)
By gaining an understanding of problem behaviours in cats – how to prevent them, what causes them, how they might interplay with disease, what medication may help, what behavioural first aid is appropriate and when more specialist help is needed – you will be better equipped to take the right action to help reduce the prevalence of problem behaviours seen in your clinic.
